FAQ

Good questions.

The things people ask most about DIOL: promises, records, rooms and membership, answered plainly.

What is DIOL, in one line?

DIOL is a personal accountability app: it takes the person you want to become out of the realm of intention and turns it into a promise with edges, which you then repeat in your own rhythm, record, and keep going with people moving in the same direction.

Do I have to use DIOL every day?

No. You set the rhythm of the behaviour: every day, on certain days of the week, or in whatever pattern fits your life. Promises with no end date carry no daily obligation at all.

The aim is not a flawless streak. It is to turn the promise you made into a system you can actually sustain in real life.

Can I only join ready-made goals?

No. You can join a ready-made room: exam prep, health, fitness, reading, productivity and plenty more, or build your own goal in full. What you will do, in what rhythm you will repeat it, how you will measure it and why: all of that is yours to set.

Why “or lose”?

Because what you add to yourself is held up by the behaviour underneath it. Your body, your knowledge, your focus and your skills all weaken over time when you leave the behaviour that supports them for long enough.

“Or lose” does not mean one slip undoes everything. It is a reminder that whatever behaviour you keep feeding is the one that grows.

What happens if I break a promise?

The promise joins your history marked as broken, and your active streak ends there. If you staked coins on it, those coins are forfeited; no real money is involved at any point.

The work you already did and the records you already made are not deleted. You can see where it got hard, reconsider the terms, and make yourself a more realistic promise. The point is not to hide a failure. It is to leave an honest record you can learn from.

What happens if I miss a repetition I planned?

It depends on the kind of promise. On one with no end date, a stretch without records erases nothing you already did.

On a promise built on a fixed number of days, a missed repetition ends it and your streak resets, rest days and freezers are exactly what step in here, and both belong to Pro. Missing one is not a verdict on who you are; what matters is that your record shows the truth.

How do records work?

When you finish the behaviour you planned, you make a record in whatever form suits it: the time you gave it, the questions you solved, the pages you read, the distance you covered, or a short note. If your promise runs in a room you can also share a photo of the day and what you made of it.

You are not expected to write reports. Each record is a small, honest piece of evidence that you actually acted on the promise you made.

What are community goals and rooms?

Rooms are where people carrying the same or a similar promise move forward together. You can join a ready-made goal: preparing for an exam, reading regularly, bringing movement into your life, or leaving a behaviour behind.

Inside a room you see other people's records and how they are getting on, you share your own walk, and you become part of a setting where the right behaviour is the ordinary one. You can ask a question when you are stuck, and read the advice left behind by the people who finished the room.

Can I post without showing who I am?

Yes, on the day photos you share and on the advice you leave after finishing a room. Both can go up under your username or anonymously, and on an anonymous post other people see a stable pseudonym, never your name. Notes you write in a room's conversation always carry your username.

How your account details are handled is set out in the Privacy Policy.

What are coins? Is this real money?

No. Coins are a virtual accountability device used only inside DIOL. They cannot be bought, cannot be sold, and cannot be converted into real money.

You start with 1,000 when you open your account, and earn 5 more on any day you check in on a day-by-day promise.

If you want to put weight behind a promise you can stake some of them. Keep the promise and your coins come back with 20% on top; break it and the amount you staked is gone. Staking is never required. Most promises are made on nothing but your word.

Will DIOL be free to use?

Yes. Making yourself a promise, joining a room and creating records will be free. On a free account you can keep one active promise at a time.

Pro will offer running several promises together, more flexible rest and freeze options, and more room to park promises you want to pause. The exact price of Pro will be announced before the app opens.
